About Voyages: Chapter 7

At the intersection of art and science lies Voyages, an original immersive event series at the National Aquarium that inspires connection to nature and celebrates all things Baltimore. Join us for Voyages: Chapter 7 and explore Aquarium exhibits through immersive performance inspired by animal perception and sensory ecology from the minds of local collaborative artworks company Submersive Productions.

Inspired by months of research within the Aquarium and expertise provided by The Johnsen Lab of Sensory Biology at Duke University, Submersive Productions created "Submerged! In the Company of Fish." This interactive theatrical experience invites guests to perform at their comfort level for the residents of the Aquarium and learn about animal perception. As you experience the Aquarium in a totally new way, this experience will inspire you to see the world from a new point of view. After exploring the exhibits, close out the night with your fellow voyagers at an Afrofuturistic after-party by Astronaut Symphony from Afro House.

Voyages: Chapter 7 promises to be a night of exploration that you won't soon forget, featuring local food vendors Mera Kitchen Collective, Common Ground, Sistahs' Sweets and Ekiben with a bar featuring Checkerspot Brewing Company and Baltimore Spirits Company.

This is where art and science meet. This is a one-of-a-kind celebration of all things Baltimore and the connection we share with the natural world. This is the Aquarium like you've never experienced it before. This is Voyages. Are you ready to embark on a journey into the deep?

About the Artist

Submersive Productions is a Baltimore-based, collaborative artworks company that creates wholly original, site-specific immersive experiences. They imagine and fabricate complete worlds in which audiences find their own paths alongside performers.

About the Experts

Every chapter of Voyages introduces scientists and experts to the artist to inform the artwork they create. At each event, we feature experts who influenced the piece or whose work is relevant to the thematic intention chosen by the artist. The scientific content experts for Voyages: Chapter 7, also a collective, offered insight into animals' visual senses.

The Johnsen Lab of Sensory Biology at Duke University

The Johnsen Lab of Sensory Biology at Duke University, led by Dr. Sönke Johnsen, conducts open-ocean research cruises to learn about animals' visual senses. They study visual adaptations like bioluminescence, ultraviolet vision and more. As a scientific collective, this group is comprised of graduate students, postdoctoral students and technicians.

After-Party

After you tour the exhibits, stay for an after-party performance by Astronaut Symphony from Afro House. Led by Scott Patterson, the Astronaut Symphony creates symphonic performance art pieces. Voice, sound design and live instrumentation create a lush cosmic soundscape that is futuristic and luxuriant. Patterson's music explores love, liberation and how we navigate our relationship to the planet, solar system and beyond.
