About Voyages: Chapter 6

At the intersection of art and science lies Voyages, an original immersive event series at the National Aquarium that inspires connection to nature and celebrates all things Baltimore. Join us for Voyages: Chapter 6 and explore Aquarium exhibits surrounded by music inspired by ecosystem feedback loops from the mind of local artist Dan Deacon, with his original musical concept performed by Baltimore musicians.

Inspired by months of research within the Aquarium and expertise provided by Patuxent Riverkeeper Fred Tutman, Dan conceived of "Feedback Loop." This interactive musical experience mimics how natural systems react to environmental changes and how these same systems undergo exponential transformation. As you experience the Aquarium in a totally new way, Dan's music will inspire you to reflect on the ecosystems around you. After exploring the exhibits, close out the night with your fellow voyagers at an intimate after-party show from Dan Deacon.

Voyages: Chapter 6 promises to be a night of exploration that you won't soon forget, featuring local food vendors Ekiben, Arepi, Crust by Mack and Sistahs' Sweets with a bar menu curated by Cane Collective available for purchase.

This is where art and science meet. This is a one-of-a-kind celebration of all things Baltimore and the connection we share with the natural world. This is the Aquarium like you've never experienced it before. This is Voyages. Are you ready to embark on a journey into the deep?

About the Artist

Dan Deacon is a Baltimore-based recording artist and performer. He is renowned for his live performances, five studio albums of innovative electronic music and numerous film scores. Dan has also premiered compositions at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and toured with popular recording artists, including Arcade Fire and Miley Cyrus.

About the Environmentalist

Every chapter of Voyages introduces scientists and experts to the artist to inform the artwork they create. At each event, we feature one expert who influenced the piece or whose work is relevant to the thematic intention chosen by the artist. The scientific content expert for Voyages: Chapter 6 offered insight into the Patuxent River's ecosystem and his personal experience as a waterkeeper.

Fred Tutman

Fred Tutman is the Patuxent Riverkeeper, a position he started in 2004. As a waterkeeper, Fred takes on the responsibility of caring and advocating for the Patuxent River by performing water quality checks, enforcing regulations and more. Fred is the only Black waterkeeper in the country, and he is passionate about making environmentalism accessible to more people.

After-Party

After you tour the exhibits, stay for an after-party performance from Dan Deacon. Dance the night away to Dan's electronic music with his famous interactive DJ show that features prompts, challenges and interpretative dance that makes you a part of the show!
