National Aquarium to Release Lily the Seal, the Aquarium’s 150th Animal Rescue!

Since 1991, National Aquarium's Animal Rescue team has been responsible for responding to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles along the Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) Peninsula, primarily along the nearly 4,360 miles of Maryland coast. The team has successfully rescued, treated, and returned the animals to their natural habitats and, on June 9, the team will release Lily, the seal that has been in their care since Easter – marking their 150th release! This is a public release so all are welcome to attend.
Lily was first admitted to the National Aquarium suffering from a broken jaw. The Animal Health team closely monitored Lily's progress, and her jaw has healed without surgical intervention. While at the Aquarium's facility, Lily enjoyed a daily mixed diet of herring and capelin. The team worked hard to provide Lily an assortment of foraging activities to help sharpen her natural hunting skills. Since being admitted seven weeks ago, Lily has gained over 12 pounds.

Those from the public interested in attending should park in the Day Use Parking Lot (normal fees may apply), cross the boardwalk to the beach, and then walk north to the marked release site.
