National Aquarium Announces New Board Members

The National Aquarium is pleased to announce the election of four new members to its National Aquarium Board of Directors, including President and CEO of Systems Application & Technologies, Inc., Timothy J. Adams; national education reform leader and former Maryland Public Schools superintendent Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick; President and CEO of Transamerica Corporation Mark W. Mullin; and IBM consultant Jacqueline Ulman.

"With their diverse experiences and backgrounds, these new Board members all share a common passion for donating their time and support to organizations that are making a difference," said John Racanelli, CEO of the National Aquarium. "We are delighted they will join us in our mission to inspire conservation of the world's aquatic treasures."

Timothy J. Adams is President and CEO of Systems Application & Technologies, Inc. (SA-TECH), a professional services firm with origins in the high technology and technical support areas of the defense industry. Founded in 1989, the company has grown into one of the largest privately held, minority-owned businesses in the nation. Adams has been the recipient of numerous awards, and recognized as a champion and leader of diversity-based business solutions. His recognition includes being named one of the "Top 100 African American Leaders in America" by the National Black Chamber of Commerce and being inducted into the Top 100 Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Hall of Fame for the Mid-Atlantic region. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of New Orleans and a Bachelor of Science from Xavier University of Louisiana. Adams resides in Bowie, Maryland, with his wife, the Honorable Sheila Tillerson Adams, and three kids.

Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick served as State Superintendent of top-ranked Maryland Public Schools from 1991 until 2011. In 2012, she was appointed the Presidential Scholar for Innovation in Teacher and Leader Preparation at Towson University, a role in which she collaborates with national experts and practitioners to transform the way that teachers engage students in learning. In addition to her work at Towson University, Dr. Grasmick is a faculty member at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, developing an innovative fellowship program to prepare administrators as leaders in special education. She received her doctorate in communicative sciences from Johns Hopkins University, her master's degree in deaf education from Gallaudet University and her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Towson University. Dr. Grasmick resides in Phoenix, Maryland.

Mark W. Mullin is President and CEO of Transamerica Corporation, having served in various roles with the company since 1987. He is chairman of the Americas Management Board, a member of the AEGON USA Board of Directors and a member of the Management Board of AEGON N.V. Prior to joining the company, he worked for Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company as an investment analyst. Mullin holds a Master of Science in finance from Loyola University and a Bachelor of Arts in English and international business from LaSalle University and the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. He resides in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jacqueline Ulman has worked for the past 16 years in IBM's Public Sector Consulting division. Her clients have included FEMA, the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs. For the past five years, she has served as an IBM subcontracts manager for a Transportation Security Administration project. She earned a master's degree in public administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University in New York. Ulman received her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, where she met her husband, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman. The Ulmans have two daughters and reside in Howard County, Maryland.
