As part of our Terrapins in the Classroom initiative, 48 baby diamondback terrapins are heading to classrooms across the state to grow.
The nation’s largest estuary is home to a variety of species, including Maryland’s state reptile, the diamondback terrapin.
More than 100 students from nine Maryland counties recently traveled to Poplar Island on the Chesapeake Bay for the first of two turtle releases as part of the National Aquarium’s 2016-17 Terrapins in the Classroom program!
In the coming weeks, 51 diamondback terrapin hatchlings will start the school year at 44 schools in nine counties across the state of Maryland!
