More Than 3,000 Participate in National Aquarium’s 48 Days of Blue Campaign

3,420 people gave back to our life-sustaining blue planet by completing over 17,000 conservation challenges between Earth Day and World Oceans Day

Baltimore—Today, World Oceans Day, is a day to celebrate Earth’s life source and the end of National Aquarium’s 48 Days of Blue initiative. Over the past 48 days (the days between Earth Day and World Oceans Day), 3,420 people participated in 17,463 conservation challenges.

As a collective, participants accomplished the following:
  • By making small changes in their daily lives, like checking for leaky pipes and enjoying a meatless Monday or two, participants saved 16,640 gallons of water – that’s enough to fill 238 bathtubs!
  • Participants successfully diverted 20,174 pounds of paper and plastic from sitting in landfills – the weight equivalent of five average sized cars or three Asian elephants.
  • Food scraps and yard waste make up 20-30% of what we throw away. By composting and engaging in thoughtful food planning, participants saved 12,680 pounds of food from landing in landfills, subsequently reducing carbon emissions!

Throughout the 48 Days of Blue, participants were asked to complete one small conservation challenge each day, delivered via email every morning. The campaign, which returned for its second year this April, seeks to inspire individuals to practice healthy conservation habits throughout their daily lives.

“We’re excited that this year’s 48 Days of Blue made such an impressive impact,” said Nabila, Chami, social media manager at the National Aquarium. “We look forward to next year’s campaign and, until then, hope that people continue to practice eco-friendly habits for the next 317 days.”

Since its first campaign run in 2015, 48 Days of Blue has helped save 49,660 pounds of paper and plastic and more than 11.7 million gallons of water.
