Read to Reef Book Club

Chapter 1 of Read to Reef Has Come to an End

Baltimore is packed with readers—so many, in fact, that the inaugural Read to Reef Book Club has already given away its last voucher to the Aquarium.

But don’t fret! The National Aquarium’s partnership with Enoch Pratt Free Library continues through the summer with Pratt Library’s Summer Reading Program, yet another opportunity for kids to earn a free Aquarium visit through reading, and will continue into the fall with a second season of the Read to Reef Book Club. Check back for more information, or sign up here to receive updates in our Aquamail newsletter.

Keep up the good reading!

It's Your Aquarium

To celebrate our local roots and to give back to the community that has given us so much, the Aquarium is proud to host a number of programs that allow locals to visit their Aquarium for less. Beginning in January 2016, the National Aquarium is partnering with the Enoch Pratt Free Library system to distribute 10,000 free Aquarium passes to families at library branches in Baltimore City.

By connecting our city youth’s love of reading to the aquatic world, we hope to drive awareness of our blue planet and the critical responsibility each of us has to protect it. We have the opportunity to raise an environmentally conscious generation that will respect and preserve the ocean that gives us life. Knowledge is a critical tool in achieving that goal—and what better place to find it than in a book?

About Read to Reef

Who can participate?

Children up to fifth grade with an Enoch Prattt Free Library card can read five aquatic- or conservation-themed books appropriate for their age levels. Once complete, they will receive a voucher for themselves and up to three additional family members or friends to visit the Aquarium. Children may receive one voucher per program season.

Age levels included in the Read to Reef program:

  • Under age 5
  • Kindergarten to first grade
  • Second grade to third grade
  • Fourth grade to fifth grade

What books can I read?

You love reading and we love the ocean, so let’s combine the two! Bookmarks, which are available at all Enoch Pratt Free Library branches offer a list of Aquarium-recommended aquatic/conservation-themed books. However, any book in that theme counts, so ask your children's librarian for suggestions! You can also find the full list of recommended books here.

You will be responsible for tracking the five books you’ve read on the bookmark.

When does the program end?

Bookmarks must be validated at your library branch and exchanged for vouchers by April 30, or while supplies last. Vouchers expire June 19, 2016. Blackout dates include March 25, March 26 and May 27 through May 30, 2016.
