Traveling Outreach Programs

Adaptations Grades 1 – 4
Students become detectives looking for clues on the "Creature Lab Coat," as they deduce how adaptations help an animal survive. A hands-on session with living animals and artifacts concludes the program. Curriculum 1A, 3A, 3C

Chesapeake Bay Explorations Grades 4 – 8
Oysters are indicators of the Chesapeake Bay's health. Test Bay water samples, measure and analyze oyster populations, and draw conclusions about the condition of the Bay. Curriculum 1A, 1C, 2E, 3A, 3E, 3F, 6A, 6B

Life in the Tropical Rain Forest Grades 2 – 4
Using costumes and puppets, students explore how plants, animals, and indigenous people depend on each other to survive in the South American rain forest. Students get up-close and personal with living animals, rainforest products, artifacts from indigenous people, and more. Parent volunteers are required to assist with interactive discovery stations. Only offered on Tuesdays. Curriculum 1A, 3A, 3D,3E, 3F, 6A, 6B

Trash in a Marsh Grades 4 – 6
Trash is a major problem affecting the Chesapeake Bay's marshes. Students count and classify "clean" trash to determine how it might affect the Bay, then develop suggestions for solutions to the problem. Curriculum 1A, 6A, 6B

Salinity Lab Grades 4 – 6
Students learn about brackish water and its importance to animals of the Chesapeake Bay. Using scientific tools, students work in groups to create their own brackish water. Curriculum 1A, 1B, 1C, 4D

Squid Dissection Lab Grades 5 – 12 Investigate an unusual mollusk through discussion and dissection. The emphasis is on how form and function of the squid's basic anatomy help this efficient predator survive in the ocean. Curriculum 1A, 3A, 3D

So You Want to be a Marine Biologist? Grades 6 – 12 From dolphin trainers to exhibit designers, and from aquarists to educators, the Aquarium offers opportunities for just about everyone. Learn about different career paths, job market potential, education requirements, and qualifying experience requirements from those in the work force. Offered on the first Friday of each month.

$75 each additional program

Program and Travel Fees
Fees for outreach programs vary. Please refer to the specific program descriptions on the following pages for information. Depending on your distance from the Aquarium, a travel fee of $20-100 may be charged.

Outreach programs can be tailored to meet your classroom and curriculum needs. All programs are age/grade appropriate. Please inform Central Reservations of any special needs or concerns when placing your reservation.
