Waffles, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nicknamed by our members, stranded in Massachusetts this past November. Now, after four months of rehab and treatment for medical issues associated with cold-stunning, Waffles has been cleared for our next release!

With radiographs clear of pneumonia and blood work at normal levels, Waffles has been taken off antibiotics, and our husbandry team is working to increase his weight by a few grams before release day. Before being cleared, a small piece of the tips of each of Waffles’ fore flippers were amputated due to lytic lesions. His flippers are now completely healed!

Canuck, the single loggerhead turtle in rehab, is our most critical patient. Canuck recently underwent extensive diagnostics, including a CT scan and an MRI, so that our Animal Health and Animal Rescue teams could better understand and treat the digestive issues he’s been displaying since he was admitted.
To combat some of the health issues Canuck is facing, our team tried a hands-off approach, taking him off all medications and limiting interaction that would cause him stress. In the past week, this approach has led to great improvements to Canuck’s diet and energy level!
Stay tuned for more animal rescue updates!
