Animal Rescue Update: Grey and Harbor Seals

A male harbor seal nicknamed Phil and a grey female seal nicknamed Luna are making great progress in rehabilitation with our Animal Rescue and Animal Health teams!

Published June 15, 2017

Phil was admitted to our Animal Rescue program in April after stranding in Delaware. After arriving in our care with numerous health issues, Phil has responded very well to rehab. phil-harbor-seal

Based on recent diagnostic tests, our veterinarians discontinued his antibiotic treatment! Our staff is closely monitoring his progress off antibiotics to ensure his health is stable. He is receiving daily enrichment to help ease his transition back to life in the wild after his eventual release.phil-harbor-seal

Phil is in the process of molting his current rust-colored coat, and a new silver-colored coat is taking its place. Seals go through an annual molting process when they shed one coat and grow a new one—similar to a dog’s shedding process. Unlike dogs, however, an individual seal’s coat pattern and color can change annually.

Luna's health is improving as well! She was admitted to our Animal Rescue program in May after stranding in Ocean City, Maryland.luna-grey-seal

Luna was treated for parasitic infections and is showing improvement in her overall health and activity level. After recent diagnostic test results, veterinarians modified her antibiotic therapy to increase the treatment of her symptoms.luna-grey-seal

She is eating a full diet of 8.5 pounds of food every day, and staff has introduced her to foraging enrichment activities that help hone her natural instincts.

Stay tuned for more updates about Luna and Phil!
