Changing our behaviors can have a big impact on the health of our planet. Here are a few tips on how we all can implement change in our everyday lives:
Challenge yourself to take a few of these actions this month. Stay tuned as we celebrate the Earth all throughout April—and beyond!
- Refuse – say NO THANKS to straws and lids when possible! Approximately 500 million plastic straws are used and disposed of in the U.S. every day. That’s enough to fill 127 school buses (and we pick up thousands of these in our cleanup events).
- Reduce – Carpool, take public transportation, or bike or walk to work one day a week. Emissions from our gas-powered vehicles are a major source of pollution.
- Reuse – Get a reusable water bottle or shopping bag and USE it! Keep one in your car, purse or backpack so it’s always ready to (re)use.
- Recycle – Almost every local jurisdiction has a recycling program. Make sure you are up-to-date on what your county/city can recycle. The list of recyclable items has expanded tremendously over the past couple of years and close to 50-75 percent of our trash can be diverted from landfills if we take advantage of the systems that are already in place!
- Be a Thoughtful Consumer – Make the environment part of your purchasing considerations. This includes small, everyday purchases (like locally grown produce), and larger investments such as appliances, lawn mowers and vehicles.
- Beautify Your Community – Join your local environmental organization for volunteer opportunities in your area. The National Aquarium hosts a variety of events in the Maryland region. Even better, start a conservation initiative of your own and engage your surrounding community!
