It’s America Recycles Day!

Here are some tips to recycle and reduce waste everyday around your own home and community:

Rely on reusable bags. Use reusable containers when shopping, traveling, storing leftovers and packing your lunch.

Refill, reuse and return containers. Instead of single-use plastic containers or bags, opt for ones you can reuse, including water bottles and produce bags for the grocery store.

Avoid single serve packaging. Instead of individually wrapped items, purchase in bulk and then divide into more sustainable containers.

Reduce the amount of unwanted mail you receive. The average American receives 30 pounds of junk mail a year! Cancel subscriptions as needed to reduce your impact.

Recycle your water. Homeowners can rearrange plumbing so that rainwater from or wastewater from the shower can be used to flush your toilet. Homeowners and renters alike can also use bathwater or leftover dishwater (with biodegradable soap) to water a garden!

Collectively recycling one ton these items saves:

  • Aluminum: Saves 39.6 barrels (1,663 gallons) of oil

  • Cardboard: Saves 390 kWh of energy

  • Glass: Saves 7.5 pounds of air pollutants from being released

  • Paper: Saves 7,000 gallons of water

  • Plastics: Saves 30 cubic yards of landfill space

Recycling doesn’t have to be an extreme change to your lifestyle! Being mindful about what you purchase is a step in the right direction.
