Staff from the National Aquarium Animal Rescue program were joined by volunteers earlier today for our annual Dolphin Count! This year, 53 dolphins were sighted.

Volunteers of all ages came out to Ocean City and Assateague State Park beaches to help our team record dolphin sightings, though the weather presented a bit of a challenge. Fog created low visibility, making it difficult to spot the dolphins from the shore.

These annual counts help marine mammal specialists capture a snapshot look at dolphin populations, reproduction rates and ocean health. Looking at the population numbers over the years can help to determine the health of the coastal ecosystem as well as the abundance of prey.

We’d like to send out a big thank you to all who joined our team today!
