Animal Update: Baby Mertens' Water Monitor

Last October, our Mertens’ water monitor laid its egg—and this species’ eggs are anything but ordinary. They can take between 200 and 300 days to hatch! To put it in perspective, the average length of incubation for a chicken egg is just 21 days.

Our monitor’s first egg hatched in June, and this month (after an incredible 276 days of incubation) we welcomed a second baby Mertens’ water monitor.
